SBWH Podcast Ep. #99: How To Slay Self-Sabotage with Kelly Coffey

This week we interview Kelly Coffey of, a formerly obese personal trainer and blogger who teaches others how to break free of shame and self-sabotage. We talk about dealing with internal struggles, shifting into positive change, and playing the part. You can listen using the player below or by subscribing in iTunes.

Growing up the focus in Kelly Coffey’s life was on food and restriction, instead of the feeling and emotions she was dealing with. Diets resulted in more weight gain and negative self-image. After hitting rock bottom following gastric bypass surgery, Kelly realized the problem was not the food she was eating but the internal struggle she faced that she needed to address so she could genuinely heal.

Today Kelly is working to help others in the hopes that they don’t have to hit the bottom to make positive changes in their lives. She realized that she was sabotaging her own efforts to get healthy by not dealing with the core issue at hand.

To deal with negative thoughts about herself, Kelly used a tool to help turn the dialog around. Instead of digging a self-loathing hole, she meets her initial negative thought with something she calls “playing the part”.

  • P is for prompt
  • A is for ask
  • R is for respond
  • T is for talk

She uses the first negative thought as a prompt. She then asks herself “what are my emotional or physical experience in this moment.” She doesn’t judge it or think too deeply about it, she recognizes what is going on inside of herself. She uses this truth as a launching off point to take a physical action or make a response that is taking care of herself. After she goes through this process, she talks in a way that supports and is positive about taking that action.

Everyone has the power to change their life through their choices.

Here are some of the things that we talked about in the show:

Have a great week!
