Give Yourself Permission
On Labor Day last week I decided to go to a big group workout at my gym. Now some of you might think that is no big deal for me, but I have to admit that I have a tendency to stick to my regular routine…like, all the time. I don’t really like to go to the gym at a different time, because my regular peeps aren’t there. I like to be in my comfort zone, so I knew going to a big holiday class was going to take myself out of that normal space.
So you know what I decided to do? I wrote myself a permission slip. (Seriously, I really wrote it out.) It said:
I give myself permission to have fun today.
Usually in a class full of people I don’t normally work out with, I would maybe hold back, be a little more quiet than usual, and stay to the “edges” so to speak. But last Monday, I gave myself permission to have fun. To be crazy! To say what I wanted to say!
And you know what happened?
IT WORKED! We played a sort of musical chairs game for a warm-up…and I WON! I laughed, I sweated, I high-fived and I flat-out enjoyed myself.
So often we don’t allow ourselves to feel the way we want to feel or to do the things we want to do. Why is that? Because it’s not our norm. Because we tell ourselves stories about what people will think about us. Because we think we should be doing things a certain way.
You know what I say?
It’s time to give yourself permission to be YOU. To step into yourself in a way that honors you and allows all of who you are to be fully present.
